Middlebrook Hall Review

2022.01.28 20:13 Explodingcamel Middlebrook Hall Review

I know it's about the time when a lot of incoming freshmen are going to be looking at dorms and filling out their housing applications, and when I was in that situation I spent a lot of time looking at random old Reddit threads to make my decision, so I figured I'd post about my own experience so far living in Middlebrook as a freshman.
I'm going to jump straight to the point and say that I do not like Middlebrook. My biggest issue is the social life. Most people here are quiet, introverted types and do not party at all, which I find disappointing because having fun on the weekends is something I was looking forward to in college. I am not saying that everybody in Middlebrook stays home and studies on Friday nights, but Harry Potter marathons and Settlers of Catan are, from what I've seen, the main social activities here. Middlebrook is known to not be a party dorm, but I didn't realize how true that was before I moved in. A lot of posts online mention that there "aren't many parties" or something along that lines, but to be clear, there are no parties. I have never seen or heard of any sort of party inside of Middlebrook. Some residents will still occasionally go out to Superblock/Dinkytown/whatever, but they are definitely a minority.
Some posts will say that Middlebrook is "what you make of it" and you can make friends who live on East Bank and still go out, which I guess is true, but, I mean, it's hard. You have to really force that unless you're some sort of very close-knit club, to be honest. Not to mention some people will immediately judge you when you say you live in Middlebrook—I personally know people who just lie about their dorm for this reason, which should tell you something about Middlebrook's reputation. It will be a lot easier to meet like-minded people if you just live in Superblock. The people who you will naturally be around and connect with are the people who live on your dorm floor, and especially if you live on an Honors floor, those people are not going to want to get hammered on the weekends.
Now, if your idea of fun doesn't include the traditional "college experience" and all of what I said sounds great to you, then that's perfectly valid. I think you should consider Middlebrook if that's the case. But if not, if you want to go out at least sometimes, don't live in Middlebrook. Do not put it anywhere on your list of preferences. You *will* be handicapping your social life.
Okay, now that that's out of the way, here's my second biggest issue—the location. It could be worse, but it is not good. It's going to be about a 15-25 minute walk to a lot of places on East Bank, which is doable but very annoying especially in the winter. Back to the social thing, you're not going to want to take a 25 minute walk home from frat row at 3 am when it's 10 degrees out.
Now, there are options other than walking everywhere. You can ride a bike. I don't have one, but it seems like the fastest way to get places. The downside is that you have a bike to be responsible for and there is a decent chance it gets stolen. There are also the buses and the light rail. I like to use these, but they don't actually save that much time and they do create occasional headaches with stuff like delays and the crackheads who often appear on public transport. There is technically a bus stop right outside of Middlebrook, but the bus does not stop there during the school day and you will find yourself having to walk 5 minutes to and from a different bus stop most of the time. Obviously that's not a lot of minutes, but just don't think you're going to completely avoid being outside. Also, there's no convenient bus stop outside of RecWell, so if you want to ride the bus there, you have to get off and then walk about another 8 minutes to get inside, which I find very annoying, as I go pretty often. So no matter what, getting around is going to be a bit of a bother.
My last complaint is about the dining hall. Firstly, it's a weirdly long walk from where most rooms are. Not a huge deal, but it just gets irritating after a while. More importantly, the food is second-tier. A lot of the time, hot dogs are served as the straight up main course. There are alternatives of course, but it's just not ideal. Most people will agree that Pioneer and 17th have better dining halls. Personally I don't really mind the food at Middlebrook, but since I am paying thousands of dollars for it, I would prefer Pio's dining hall, which, by the way, in addition to its good food, has significantly better hours than other dining halls.
So far, this post has been six paragraphs of me hating on Middlebrook, so it's about time to say what I like. The views from dorms on the higher floors are good. My dorm window faces the Minneapolis skyline and the sunsets are very gorgeous. The quiet can definitely be good—it is never hard to sleep or study. The people are nice. I do not any have drama with any of the people I know here because they're just not that type of people. It's the "honors dorm", which is occasionally helpful as an honors student. I always have floor-mates in my honors classes and there is tutoring available in the building should I ever need help.
Overall, Middlebrook has pros and cons. For me, the cons far outweigh the pros, and if you have similar priorities—going out, being social, connecting with campus culture—I would strongly recommend that you do not rank Middlebrook and instead look at Superblock (the four dorms in Superblock are not all equivalent, but I'm not qualified to talk about the differences), 17th, and perhaps Stanford. But I know that not everyone is like me, so if you want to focus on academics, have a quiet place to stay, and enjoy small social gatherings, it is at least worth considering. Although I would note that Comstock will have a lot of those same benefits in a more convenient location. Hopefully this post has been helpful, and if anybody else who has lived in student housing has something to add or dispute, I'd love to hear it.

2022.01.28 20:13 titsmacgee69420 Question: I've bridge 600 MATIC to my Matic Metamask Wallet and would like to buy SOS. Where would I be able to find that?

Title says it all; I've done the hard part but I'm a bit lost now. My intent with adding polygon to my Matic network on metmask was so I could purchase small cap alt coins. Any advice on how to proceed?
